The Air Intake System of an automobile is one of the major components of the vehicle. This system is a very important part of the vehicle, which has the duty of inhaling air from the atmosphere, filtering the unclean air and eventually supplying the dirt free air to the engine.
The engine needs clean air at the proper pressure to produce power which is used to run the vehicle. The Air Intake System serves this purpose for the vehicle. If the Air Intake System fails or has some troubled operation, then the engine will not get the required amount of air to run the vehicle and surely will malfunction.
Care should be always taken to maintain cold air intake systems trouble-free. The user of the vehicle needs to know how to identify troubles in the Air Intake System.
Where the Failures of May Occur?
The Air Intake system consists of an engine air Filter, The tubes to the inlet manifold, heat resistant shield, etc. There can be a leakage in any of these parts. Also, the outdated service life of these components may create some improper functioning.
Signs of Failure in Air Intake System
Failure or malfunction in the Air Intake system of your vehicle can be presumed by some of the signs that your vehicle shows. Some of those symptoms will be discussed in this section.
Heating of the Engine
The improper functioning Air intake will not let the engine generate power properly. This will lead to improper functioning of the engine as well as the malfunction of components like the cooling system etc. The ultimate result will get the engine unnecessarily heated.
If there is a leak in the inlet manifold of the air intake, it will not provide sufficient air for the air-fuel mixture to the engine. As a result, the engine may not run properly or it may have a rough idle condition, depending on how bad the crack in the system is.
Noises from the Engine
There may be some disturbing sounds and noises coming from the engine. In the case of leakages, there may be even sound coming like whistles. There can be metallic noises as well as coming from the inlet manifold pipes also.
If the Air Intake system is having some failure, it will affect the overall vehicle performance and the power generation process as well. The torque and horsepower of the vehicle will decrease and off-road vehicles may start to get stuck in clays and sand.
The vehicle with a faulty air intake system will not be able to attain high speeds in spite of throttling fully. As the engine does not get a proper air-fuel mixture, it will work in a lesser speed and provide the vehicle low running speed.
Higher Fuel Consumption
If there is a fault in your air intake system, it will try to compensate for the lack of power by taking more Air-fuel mixture. The power will not be sufficient, but this additional air-fuel mixture suction will require more of the fuel. This will lead to higher fuel consumption of the vehicle.
Additional Coolant Requirement in the Radiator
The heating of the engine leads to the requirement of more coolant (generally water) in the coolant system of the vehicle. The cooling system always tries to keep the engine cool and to do so for an overheated engine, it will require more frequent charging of water.
Improper Air Condition Performance
The Air Condition of a vehicle takes its required power to run from the engine of the vehicle. The engine with faulty air intake system will not be able to generate sufficient power. This lack of power generation will not let the Air Condition function properly.
The color of the vehicle’s emission will turn into a dark black color. This happens as the engine starts to burn excessive fuel having less air supplied. This results in incomplete combustion and fuel particles pass through the exhaust pipe in the form of black smoke.
Problems in Battery Charging
The battery of the car takes power from the engine to get it charged. If the engine cannot produce enough power due to a fault in the air intake, it will not be able to provide sufficient power to charge the battery and it will not be properly charged.
Difficulties in Starting
Any faults in the Air Intake system like an unclean or jammed air filter or any such problems will lead to difficulty in igniting the engine and starting the vehicle, as the engine can no longer perform properly.
Clean air from the atmosphere is one of the major requirements for a perfectly functioning engine. Without the ample and required supply of it, the engine will not be able to provide desirable performance. Also, this malfunctioning leads to excessive fuel consumption, which leads to economic loss.
This improper functioning of the engine indirectly affects the Air Conditioning System, the charging system of the vehicle, the starting motor and many more. So there could be severe losses due to a failing air intake system.
The user should always check for the signs mentioned in this article in his car and take the necessary steps to find and solve the problem as soon as possible for the sake of longevity and proper functioning of his vehicle.
